The people behind this are looking for pictures and memorabilia from the 90s and, currently, are eager to get their hands on anything about the former Ultrasound Show Bar.

It's actually much more than a series of short films... it's interactive and portable! In their own words:

"City Sonic is a new, multi-platform music series that delivers these stories straight into the hands of todayʼs music fans, wherever they are: online, on TV, and on their mobile phones.

Itʼs a backstage, all-access pass to 24 revealing short films featuring contemporary music stars such as K-OS, Broken Social Scene, Sarah Slean and more.

Each film tells the story of one musician and their shared history with a legendary Toronto music venue. City Sonic creates a new level of engagement with the city through location-based storytelling and a gaming component built around the new generation of mobile phones."

If you can help them out, contact Jason @ 416 703 5580 x224. How did I let this happen? Afterall, Toronto is one of Canada's most prominent cities, boasting countless rock clubs and seemingly endless musical opportunities. The answer was simple. I lived way up at Steeles and Keele, a cultural void of North Toronto which meant that in order to see a show I had to travel downtown. This, however, wasn't the problem. The problem was going home after a show. Toronto's transit system left much to be desired (and maybe still does) - what with the subway closing before 2:00am and extremely limited and unreliable late night bus schedules. (I write this with my NYC-bias where the subways don't shut down. And, yes, they smell like roses too). But after numerous outings of going to shows by myself, 2 to 2.5 hour commutes back home, falling asleep on the wrong late night bus and ending up in Etobicoke, waiting in the freezing cold for the Bathurst Street "blue-light" bus which came every 45 minutes to an hour, I began for the first time to moderate my late night trips to downtown clubs.

This is not to say that I stopped completely. From time to time YorkU would have some decent bands play at one or two of the campus bars and more often than not, I jumped at those opportunities. But I saved the downtown pilgrimages for special occassions. This show at Lee's Palace, featuring The New Grand, Scratching Post, Smoother, Radioblaster, Len, and Hip Club Groove was one. I also had the good fortune of seeing this show with Brendan and Ian, who took a Greyhound in from Peterborough to see it with me. When thinking about our respective travel times it took to get to the show, I'm pretty sure that Peterborough and North York were roughly equal distances from Lee's Palace. It certainly felt that way.

Oh, and it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. The show rocked.

CIRM Member Forum

Hello All,

We've set up a Canadian Indie Rock Memories group on Facebook which we hope will complement this blog by allowing us all to get a little more up close and personal. The Rheostatics have, after 21 years, called it a day. As a tribute to the majesty of the Rheostatics, several indie bands from the 90s reunited to record a CD of Rheos' songs: the Inbreds, Local Rabbits, and Weeping Tile (all reunited) are joined by King Cobb Steelie, Barenaked Ladies, Wooden Stars, and By Divine Right, among others, on a CD available in limited copies from Zunior.com.

The Local Rabbits' Ben Gunning is quoted as saying of the Rheostatics: "Of all they gave us, though, the most valuable is, without a doubt, their demonstration of what it means to be truly independent. Not just 'indie' as a synonym for 'unsigned,' but independent of the trends of the day creatively unfettered."

Well said, Mr. Gunning.

Links and more Links

Honest, this blog will become a priority soon...one of these days (take pity on two busy grad students, though, won't ya?!).... In the meantime, we've stumbled across some 90's Canadian Indie Rock links and news of late....

As most of the world knows--or at least that part of the world with half-decent musical taste knows--Canadian indie rock Kings, the Rheostatics are calling it a day after three decades... The CBC has posted a rather interesting photo essay of the band's history... The Rheostatics' Northern Odyssey. Photo #7 is of particular interest to us, since we were in that crowd--front row, actually, stage right, pretty much directly in front of Martin Tielli... Check out my photos from that same day, below.... This was the same Canada Day performance where Tragically Hip fans pretty much destroyed the afternoon for true lovers of Canadian music, by consistently throwing garbage and water bottles onto the stage, all the while screaming "Get off the stage, we want the Hip..." It was pathetic.... Dave Bidini tells the tale rather well in his excellent book, On A Cold Road.

And then there are the series of sites created by the fine fellows at Canadian Music Forum, to date featuring the Rheostatics, Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, and Thomas Trio and the Red Albino.

Finally, there are rumours circulating that Mint Records will reissue Cub's albums, along with Maow's only release (featuring Neko Case on drums and vocals). Paying no attention to who was opening (because we didn't recognise the name of the band), we settled into one of the booths near the stage and were chatting absent-mindedly. About three chords into the opening act's first song, I distinctly recognised the voice and guitar of Andrew Cash. Charles and I were both fans of Andrew Cash, so it was a terrific surprise to accidentally catch one of the first gigs that URSULA played. Ursula was, in fact, the same band Andrew Cash had been playing with for years (featuring, briefly, Jason Collett on bass), but apparently he felt the sound on his last album, "Hi," had been as much about the band as it was his own song-writing. Thus, the birth of Ursula, who released only one album, "Happy To Be Outraged." After Ursula's set that night, we chatted up Andrew Cash and managed to get a free beer out of him. Mr. Cash is now, of course, quite busy and successful, playing and putting out albums with his brother, Peter, as The Cash Brothers.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cdnindierockmemories.blogspot.com/2006/11/free-beer-and-izen-bros-band.html' title='Free Beer and the Izen Bros. "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans."

As a fan of the rock 'n' roll music, I probably gave my Mother more than a few sleepless nights. Hanging out at all-age music clubs like the Embassy and Call the Office in London meant that I met the occassional hooligan, no doubt (and the neighbourhood in which the Embassy was located in the 1990's was far from desirable), but an often overlooked positive aspect of listening to music (and I mean really listening), going to live shows, and bumping shoulders with indie rockstars is that a few of those "rockstars" are actually smart. In my own case, I developed a kind of friendship with one-half of the 90's bass and drum duo, the Inbreds, from Kingston, Ontario.

I was first turned on to the Inbreds while watching an episode of MuchWest--Terry David Mulligan was interviewing (another intellectually stimulating band) the Rheostatics about their work on the film Whale Music (based on a superb novel by Paul Quarrington, by the way). As he often did after an interview, Mulligan asked the band what video they'd like to see (I assume expecting they would pick one of their own). After a second or two of humming and hawing, Martin Tielli blurted out "Prince! by the Inbreds." Mulligan seemed momentarily confused, but then recovered in fine style with the quirp "a band from Kingston, Ontario, am I right?" And so I was introduced to the Inbreds. The video for "Prince" had perhaps never before been played on MuchMusic, so it was a wonder that Mulligan had heard of this truly indie band at all. "Prince," about a "toy dog on wheels," was recorded on a four-track recorder and the video was shot with homevideo equipment, and featured Dave Ullrich and Mike O'Neill horsing around at an old quarry. But the song and video was more than enough to inspire me, and within a few days (after some investigation) I was a full-fledged Inbreds fan. How many other Inbreds' fans were born that day is difficult to say, but with Tielli's selfless request for the "Prince" video, the career of the Inbreds was in many ways launched. I bought the Inbreds' full-length album (featuring "Prince"), Hilario, on cassette--for $12 postpaid from their very own record label, PF Records. And within less than a year, I had worn my copy of Hilario out--the cassette had given up the ghost, so I was forced to replace it on CD. No doubt that cassette wore out because it was constantly playing in my Mother's 1991 Cavalier, which I drove a lot. For several months or more, Hilario, was a musical staple. I caught my first Inbreds show in London, Ontario at the Embassy (along with Trout and King Cobb Steelie) on 4 June, 1994, and I would see them at least seven more times in the next 2.5 years.

To say they were my favourite Canadian Indie band would be an understatement. The Inbreds, in my mind, embodied all that was great about Canadian Indie Rock--their music was excellent, at once melodic and rockin', they recorded and produced their own stuff on a tight budget, and they were just two guys--who toured in a Cavalier! Better still, they were approachable and friendly guys who didn't shy away from their fans. At that very first show in June 1994 I introduced myself to Dave Ullrich and for more than a year after that we maintained a friendly correspondence. And this was in the days before everyone was living online, emailing their every thought and query. I wrote letters, by hand, to Dave; and Dave wrote letters, by hand, in response. At those following seven shows Dave never ceased to seek me out, and we'd have a friendly chat. I even queried Dave in making the big decision about what university I'd attend. As I knew that he and Mike had attended Queen's in Kingston, I turned to Dave for advice on Queen's. Even after the Inbreds released Kombinator, and became bonified indie rock superstars, Dave remained friendly. Only through passing years and changing interests did our correspondence cease. So, in truth, my Mom had very little to worry about. The Inbreds were not only an outlet to rock out to, they were my intellectual peers.

Canadian Indie Rock Images

As time permits, and the free Flickr service allows, images documenting memories of Canadian Indie Rock will be posted here. In addition to this blog, where we will post our memories and memorabilia, Paul and I have a book in the works... More on that later.

Fittingly, I want to include the text of a list I once kept of all the bands and shows that I attended. While this list abruptly ends in March, 1997, my concert experiences did not--I just simply stopped counting at that point.... But this journal, of sorts, marks the beginning of our project, so fittingly I want to share it...

Past Concerts, Shows

1.
